The $10 Liberty Head Gold Eagle, minted from 1838 to 1907, is a significant piece of American numismatic history. Designed by Christian Gobrecht, its obverse features Lady Liberty inspired by Benjamin West’s painting “Omnia Vincit Amor,” while the reverse showcases a heraldic eagle. Mintage numbers for this series vary widely, from as few as 100 coins to over a million in certain years.
In 1893, the Philadelphia Mint produced approximately 1,840,840 of these coins. Despite this high mintage, only 15 specimens have received the Certified Acceptance Corporation (CAC) sticker, indicating exceptional quality within their grade. CAC evaluates previously graded coins, awarding stickers to those meeting stringent standards, thereby providing collectors with added confidence in their purchases.
This particular coin is housed in a classic NGC “fatty” holder, known for its thicker design used in the early years of the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation. These holders are often sought after by collectors due to their vintage appeal and the perception that coins graded during this period were assessed with stricter standards.
