In 2003, the U.S. Mint released the 18th annual Gold American Eagle series, coinciding with a continued rise in gold prices and increased interest in gold coins and bullion. The Mint responded by boosting production across all denominations, with the one-tenth ounce Gold Eagle experiencing a 6% increase from the previous year, totaling 245,029 coins. Despite this higher mintage, less than 2% of these coins have been graded a perfect MS70 by NGC, making them scarce and highly sought after by investors and collectors.
