1797 NGC AU53 Draped Bust Dollar

$18,625.00

Description

The Draped Bust Dollar was the second silver dollar minted by the United States from 1795 to 1803. In October 1795, Mint Director Elias Boudinot mandated the official 0.892 fineness (89.2%) silver standard for the dollar, replacing the 0.900 (90%) silver fineness previously used. Due to a decline in silver deposits at the Philadelphia Mint, production of silver dollars decreased toward the end of the 18th century. In 1804, the U.S. Mint ceased striking silver dollars, with 1803 being the final production year.

Today, these early American Silver Dollars are highly sought-after among collectors. In 1797, just over 7,000 Draped Bust Dollars were minted, and only 13 coins have been graded AU53 by NGC, making them rare and valuable in numismatic history.
