1928 NGC MS63 $2.50 Gold Indian CAC

$950.00

Description

The Indian Head Quarter Eagle, first minted in 1908, is one of the most distinctive coins in American numismatic history. Unlike traditional coin designs, where raised elements stand above the surface, this coin features an incuse design, meaning the details are sunken into the surface rather than raised. This innovative and unconventional design was crafted by Bela Lyon Pratt and was met with skepticism at the time. However, today, it is one of the most sought-after pre-1933 U.S. gold coins.

This $2.50 Indian Head Quarter Eagle holds a special place in American coinage as one of only two U.S. coins to feature an incuse design, the other being the $5 Indian Half Eagle. While initially controversial, these coins are now celebrated for their bold artistry and historical significance.

Production of this coin ceased in 1929, giving it a relatively short mintage period of just 15 years, making high-grade examples increasingly rare. Of the over 400,000 coins struck, less than 2% have been graded MS63 by NGC, and only 212 coins have been awarded the prestigious CAC certification, affirming their exceptional quality.
